Playing a radio or television for your customers is treated exactly the same as if you are playing recorded music.

Phonographic Performance (Ireland) Limited was established in 1968 to act as a central administrator of record company rights in the public performance, broadcasting and reproduction of their recordings. PPI is owned by its members - Irish and multinational record companies - and membership is open to all record companies, big & small.

Record companies have a right to be paid whenever their recordings (CDs, tapes, LPs, Mp3/iPods etc) or music videos are played in public. Performers have a right to be paid when sound recordings they have contributed to are played in public.

PPI collects both of these payments in one single licence fee and then distributes the money to record companies and performers through RAAP (Recorded Artists Actors Performers Ltd).

PPI's Members consist of record companies including all the well-known multinational and major Irish record companies. All of PPI's income (less administration charges) is distributed every year to its members and to performers signed to member record companies.

Under Copyright law, you may not make a copy of a sound recording or music video without the prior, express permission of the record company which owns the copyright in that sound recording or music video.

If you wish to make copies of sound recordings or music videos for the purposes of commercially supplying background music compilations to venues such as pubs, restaurants, shops, etc, ask PPI about obtaining a Dubbing Licence. This licence allows you to supply your clients with specially programmed background music compilations, legally and above board.

PPI Dubbing Licences also permit jukebox operations to keep their jukeboxes stocked with the very latest hits.

Professional DJs who want to legally copy their original repertoire onto digital media can now get apply for a ProDJ licence. This is a new scheme established in response to requests from the professional DJ community which enables DJs to create back-up copies of their CDs and other legally-acquired tracks. As a joint MCPS / PPI scheme, it’s a one-stop-shop for DJs who want to respect copyright.
